Our Favorite Off-Roading Spots in San Diego
Six Trails to Put Your Car Paint Protection Film to the Test
What’s not to love about San Diego? We’re the city that coined the phrase “no bad days.” We’ve got beautiful beaches, an amazing selection of bars and restaurants, and some of the most scenic off-roading spots in all of Southern California. Locals like to hit the trails in lifted trucks as well as ATVs and UTVs. They’re definitely fun but can be a little hard on the paint job if you’re not careful. Make sure to invest in car paint protection film if you want to protect your ride from rocks and debris. The team at El Cajon Window Tinting can set you up with professional paint protection film installation. Just a little something to keep in mind if you plan on hitting some of the more aggressive trails. So, without further ado, here are our top six off-roading spots to check out in San Diego.
#1 – BEAR VALLEY ROAD
If you’re a newcomer to the off-roading scene, Bear Valley Road is specifically designed for beginners while also paying off with some fantastic views of both Cottonwood Valley and Bear Valley. Another great benefit of this trail is that it’s very close to San Diego. Just take the Pine Valley Rd. exit off I-8. Please note that an adventure pass is required to drive this trail.
#2 – CORRAL CANYON OHV TRAIL
Corral Canyon provides OHV drivers plenty of trails to explore with over 50 miles of diverse roads and trails that are packed with scenic views. It is definitely one of the more challenging trails, so only experienced drivers who are comfortable with a high degree of difficulty along with high elevation should attempt it. Additionally, wildfires are a concern due to dry vegetation, so your vehicle must have a U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor.
#3 – PALOMAR DIVIDE ROAD
Located between San Diego and Los Angeles, the Palomar Divide Road is a relaxing and scenic ride that offers some amazing views with very little difficulty. Clocking in around 25 miles, the trail leads to High Point Lookout in the Cleveland National Forest. The trail itself has a bit of a Sierra Nevada feel with all the pine, cedar, and fir trees. It’s also a great spot for fishing, camping, and other outdoor fun.
#4 – STRAWBERRY LAKE OHV TRAIL
Although we’d like to say that the Strawberry Lake OHV Trail is short and sweet, it turns out only one of those things is true. Clocking in at 4.5 miles, Strawberry Lake is definitely one of the shorter San Diego trails; however, large boulders and narrow spots make getting to the lake a big challenge. Make sure you have the proper tires and vehicle so you don’t get stuck. If you can make it through, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best fishing spots in all of Southern California. Make sure to bring your rods, lures, and camping equipment.
#5 – BOULDER CREEK ROAD
Another great trail for beginners, Boulder Creek Road is probably one of the smoothest and most scenic trails in California. Out of all the trails we’ve previously mentioned, this one is by far the easiest. You don’t even need a 4×4 to enjoy it. Other off-roaders have reported seeing compact cars out on this trail.
#6 – BLACK MOUNTAIN OHV TRAIL
Clocking in at just over 14 miles, the Black Mountain OHV Trail is considered moderate level difficulty and also moderately trafficked. Consider this trail if you want to give yourself a challenge but aren’t quite ready for something like the Strawberry Lake OHV Trail. Black Mountain is lined with gorgeous wildflowers and plenty of scenic views for you and your passengers to enjoy.
